In other words, no, it won’t be a foldable device

We’ve known for a while that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone, but this has never been a big surprise, especially because this is a trend that everybody seems to be embracing these days.

Previously, people close to the matter said the new foldable iPhone could launch in 2021 the earliest, one year after Apple adds 5G support to its smartphone.

Now that 5G is projected to go live on the entire iPhone generation that launches this fall, the timing seems to be accurate, so the foldable iPhone could, therefore, see daylight as soon as the next year.

But as far as leakster Jon Prosser is concerned, the foldable iPhone will be as foldable as Microsoft’s Surface Duo. In other words, it won’t be a foldable model but a dual-screen device, as Apple wants to go for a design that’s clearly inspired by the Android device launched by its Redmond-based rival.

What this means is that the new iPhone won’t just fold like other models out there but actually feature two different screens connected by a hinge. So technically, this device will be a dual-screen iPhone that will support multiple form factors, pretty much like the Surface Duo does.

The launch date, still just a guess for now

When this is iPhone supposed to launch is still a mystery, but Apple is still experimenting with the design. So for example, the current prototype comes without a notch, which makes total sense given that Apple has more space on the device to install the Face ID camera.

There’s a chance the facial recognition module could be somehow integrated into the hinge, thus allowing for a cleaner design on the displays.

For now, we’re still far away from the moment this new iPhone is supposed to see daylight, so anything could change by the time the go-ahead is given to this device.
