The 14th Dalai Lama isn’t ruling out the possibility that his successor be a woman, especially since he believes today’s troubled state of the world could benefit from a female Dalai Lama, as women are known to be more affectionate and compassionate than men.

However, there’s a huge caveat with this: if there’s to be a female Dalai Lama, she has to be pretty in the face. In fact, the exact phrase the Dalai Lama uses is “very attractive,” as you can see in the video below.

In a new BBC interview with Clive Myrie, the Dalai Lama touches on a series of hot topics, from the immigration crisis in Europe to feminism. He considers himself a feminist, having long made his stance known: he fights for the rights of women from all over the world and for equality, so he is a feminist.

So in a very un-feminist move, asked if a female Dalai Lama could ever happen, he responds with: “I mean if female Dalai Lama come, then that female must be very attractive, otherwise not much use.”

Not surprisingly, the sections of the Internet are up in arms, outraged that his holiness would say such a thing, whilst proclaiming to be a feminist, because he’s suggesting that women are good for 2 things: for being compassionate and looking good.

He even insists that he’s not joking, as you can see in the second video below. However, if you watch the full video, you will notice he says something else that’s not received attention online, about how he attributes his success to good looks too.

So… was he joking after all or not? What do you think?
