Kanye West managed to get everybody talking about his Glastonbury 2015 performance, especially after he proclaimed himself the “greatest rock star alive on the planet,” but it was another appearance that was the most talked about moment of the British music festival.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama made a surprise appearance. He was introduced on stage by singer Patti Smith and he was presented with a birthday cake, since he will be turning 80 soon.

Not wanting to let such an occasion go by, the crowd sang Happy Birthday to him twice, once on their own and the second time at Smith’s suggestion.

As you can see in the video below, the Dalai Lama also held a short speech about the importance of being kind to one another, because we are all human. He praised Smith and her band for being so energetic and making beautiful music that pleased so many people, despite having white hair.

He joked that he should follow her example and try to stay more “active.”

The BBC, which holds broadcasting rights to the festival, reports that, before taking to the Pyramid Stage, the Dalai Lama took part in a panel on which he talked, among other things, about climate change and the Pope’s recent comment on the issue.
