Microsoft has just rolled out an update for the Camera app on Windows 10 Mobile that brings one of the most eagerly anticipated features on Lumia devices.

Slow-motion video recording, an option that’s already available on iPhones, will now work on a bunch of Lumia models as well, with similar functionality to be introduced on more devices by the time the final version of Windows 10 Mobile lands.

Only on flagship models

For the moment, this feature only works on the existing Windows Phone flagships, such as Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520, which boast cameras capable of shooting in slow motion. Both these devices sport 20-megapixel cameras with Carl Zeiss optics and optical image stabilization. The new Lumia flagships that will arrive on shelves this month will also come with such features.

“Slow-motion video has been one of the most frequent requests we hear from people using the Camera app on Windows Phone and Windows 10. So, we’re happy to announce that you can now capture slow-motion video with Camera for Windows 10 on Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and Lumia Icon phones. The latest Windows build now supports video capture of 120 fps in 720p resolution,” Microsoft explains.

To use this feature, simply update the Camera app on your Windows 10 Mobile device, launch it, switch to video, and then look for the turtle icon on the camera screen.

You can further adjust clips by selecting the “Edit slow motion” when opening the video in the new Photos app, so you can trim and play specific parts of the clip at normal or high speed.

Obviously, it’s good to see that Microsoft finally adds this kind of features to its Lumia lineup, but some still think that this might be too little, too late. Time will tell, however, if slow-motion video recording arrives on Lumias at the right moment for Microsoft, and in the meantime, have a look at the clip below to see what this feature can do on the iPhone.
