Times have changed and macOS is no longer considered a more secure alternative to Windows, and people using Apple’s platform are looking for security products to protect their data too.

And because the number of threats aimed at macOS users has increased significantly in the last few years, more security companies have started investing in products aimed at blocking the existing and the new threats, so picking the best solution is very often pretty difficult.

The experts over at AV-TEST come to lend these people a hand, as new research conducted in two rounds in February and March evaluated the performance of the top security products on macOS. In other words, if you’re looking for the best antivirus for macOS, these results right here should help you find it.

The best antivirus

First and foremost, AV-TEST evaluated these security products in three key areas, namely protection, performance, and usability. The apps could obtain a maximum of six points in each of the three tests, with a maximum of 18 points overall.

Out of the total 10 security solutions involved in the test, no less than five managed to get 18 points after performing nearly flawlessly in the protection, performance, and usability tests. These are Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, Intego VirusBarrier, Kaspersky Internet Security, NortonLifeLock Norton Security, and Trend Micro Antivirus.

On the other hand, the one that got the lowest score is Tuxguard Antivirus, which receiveD 0 points for protection, 6 points for performance, and 4 points for usability.

Somewhat surprising is the disappointing performance of Avira Antivirus Pro, which has long been considered quite a powerful security product. According to AV-TEST’s research, this antivirus received 6 points for the protection offered to users, but on the other hand, it got only 3.5 points for the performance during the tests.
