Apple's 6th generation iPad received repairability score 2

For the joy of many, as well as for repair purposes, iFixit published the teardown for Apple's recently announced sixth-generation iPad for education with Apple Pencil support.

iFixit is well known for their teardowns of Apple's products, as well as other popular devices from various manufacturers. Their teardowns are perfect for those who want to attempt to repair the respective products themselves, but also for repair shops around the globe.

As expected, iFixit managed to disassemble Apple's educational-focused iPad, which not only revealed the fact the tablet is extremely hard to repair, like previous iPad models, but it also shares many of the internal of the fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad announced last year, to the surprise of no one.

While the new iPad received a repairability score of 2 out of 10, there's one thing that caught iFixit's eyes, namely the iPad's digitizer panel, which appears to separate from the display easily, thus making it easier for a repair center to replace it in case students or educators drop the tablet.

"iPad's glued-glass display is more vulnerable to drops. Thankfully, this is the one iPad that retains an air-gapped digitizer panel—not as visually impressive as other recent iPads, but it's much cheaper to replace cracked glass that isn't LOCA-bonded to the display panel underneath," said iFixit.

6th Gen iPad comes with the same battery as previous model

Besides repairability, iFixit's teardown reveals that the brand-new, educational-focused iPad tablet uses Apple's A10 Fusion chip and two Broadcom touchscreen controller chips that have been borrowed from the more expensive and performant 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models to add support for Apple Pencil.

Also, iFixit found that 2018 iPad comes with the same 32.9 Wh capacity battery found in last year's iPad, noting the fact that battery replacements are particularly challenging due to the extra adhesive that holds nearly everything else in place.
