“Those songs are popular for a reason,” he says

Ryan Adams’ 15th studio album is called “1989” and is a track-by-track cover of Taylor Swift’s album of the same name. His version wasn’t as successful as hers, but it was universally met with positive reviews; even Taylor voiced her support for the project, though she was not directly involved in its creation.

That he would chose her most recent album, which also happens to be her first foray into pure pop, to cover is no coincidence, Adams says in a recent interview the Guardian.

He admits that Taylor’s “White Horse” “[expletive]-ed me up” because it hit him “like a tidal wave.” Apparently, it is a unique combination of strong lyrics and Taylor’s amazing voice, which pierces through everything and touches the heart directly.

Taylor is a modern-day Shakespeare, Ryan tells the publication. He compares his own work to “being in Ghostbusters or something,” while hers is Shakespeare: making the transition from one to the other wasn’t easy.

When the reporter tells him that the comparison might be overgenerous, Adams stands his ground. “Well, look, those songs are popular for a reason. She’s a popular artist for a reason,” he says.

This sounds like Kanye West saying that he’s a fashion genius because his products are popular, but could Ryan Adams be right in Taylor’s case? What do you think? Let me know in the comments section below.
