Back in 2016, Nightdive Studios, a team of industry veterans, put up a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for their System Shock reboot. The campaign was quite successful and managed to raise $1,350,000 by the end of the 30 days, although developers only asked for $900,000.

Unfortunately, the game's release was delayed several times and it's definitely not because of the COVID-19 pandemic since Nightdive Studios adopted a remote work model long before 2020. Sometime this year, the release date of the System Shock reboot has been updated on Steam with a timeframe rather than a firm date: Summer 2021.

Yesterday, the folks at Nightdive Studios showcased a 7-minute gameplay trailer during The Weekly Twitch gaming show, which gives fans hope that maybe this time the studio will keep its promise and will eventually launch the game by the end of the summer.

As far as the game's looks and feel, you are free to judge for yourself after watching the gameplay trailer released today. Many believe that the only reason this trailer exists is because we're so close to the game's launch and Nightdive Studios wanted to show something to its backers, and it's hard not to agree with them.

Regardless of what we believe though, the System Shock reboot seems to shape up nicely, at least from what is shown in the gameplay trailer. And for those who'd like to try it out for themselves, the game has a demo available for free on Steam.

More importantly, System Shock is now available for pre-order for €38 / $40, and those who get it will also receive System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition for free when it releases. Nightdive Studios asks for a lot of faith from fans of the franchise, but if you want to support the studio, you should definitely pre-order their upcoming game.
