Benchmark indicates AMD Ryzen 7 Renoir in Surface Laptop 4

Microsoft is projected to take the wraps off the Surface Laptop 4 as soon as this spring (or, if not, in the fall of this year), and needless to say, everybody expects major upgrades on all fronts.

Including under the hood, that is, as Microsoft going for the latest-generation hardware is something that makes total sense for a device that’s supposed to serve as a pioneer of the Surface lineup.

But according to NotebookCheck, there’s some bad news in this regard. Because a recently discovered benchmark indicates that the Surface Laptop 4 could come with AMZ Ryzen 7 under the hood and not with the Ryzen 5000.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Why would Microsoft launch a Surface Laptop with an old chip when, in fact, only the best hardware is supposed to be available on Surface devices?

The company already tried this approach with the Surface Duo, which launched with a previous-generation processor back in 2020, so certainly, this finding might be concerning for some potential customers who planned an upgrade.

No confirmation from Microsoft

But it’s not all awful news, or at least, not until Microsoft provides the full spec sheet for the Surface Laptop. Because after all, the aforementioned configuration could actually be a lower-end version of the Surface Laptop 4 or the base model that would become available at a lower price.

Most likely, Microsoft wants to make the Surface Laptop 4 the right device for everybody, so at the end of the day, the new model could land with a choice of multiple processors. Those who want the upgraded device but don’t care so much about the latest processor can always pick this more affordable version, while those willing to spend more can get a more powerful version likely with Ryzen 5000.

Of course, everything is still in the rumor stage right now, so let’s just wait for Microsoft to share the full info on the Surface Laptop 4.
