After Animal Crossing: New Horizons, another important Nintendo Switch game is getting a major update this week: Super Mario Maker 2. Unlike Animal Crossing that brings a bunch of seasonal events, the upcoming Super Mario Maker 2 update adds new options for players who want to build their own world maps.

The Super Mario Maker 2 update will be available for download for free on April 22 and will add the new World Maker mode, as well as a host of new content and features. We've added a trailer below that highlights some of the most important changes Super Mario Maker 2 players will get after applying the update.

Long story short, the multiple courses created by a user in the new World Make mode can be tied together on a path from the starting point on a world map to the end castle. Furthermore, the look of the world map can also be customized.

But that's not all, as Nintendo revealed that up to eight worlds containing a total of up to 40 courses can be combined, creating a mini Super Mario game that can be shared with others. Of course, you'll need a Nintendo Account and an Internet connection to be able to do that.

Another important addition to the game, the Koopalings will be visiting Super Mario Maker 2. All seven of these troublemakers, each with his or her own movement pattern, can be added to user-created courses. Also, more enemies added to the game include Phanto and the wind-up Mechakoopas.

Hardcore players will be happy to know that additional power-ups and course parts will be coming to Super Mario Maker 2 as part of the free update. For example, the SMB2 Mushroom, which transforms Mario and friends into their look from Super Mario Bros 2 and allows them to pick up and throw items and enemies will be added to the game.

And, with the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario will now be able to swim through water with ease, and even run across its surface. Other power-ups added to the game are the Power Balloon first introduced in Super Mario World, the Super Acorn from New Super Mario Bros. U and the Boomerang Flower from Super Mario 3D World. From the same game, there are also five variations for wearables like the Cannon Box and Propeller Box.
