Valve’s Steam platform has recently announced that it reached a new record regarding the concurrent connected users, as the world stays home due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Steam claims on March 15, no less than 20,313,476 users were connected at the same time on the gaming platform, and it goes without saying that people staying home amid the COVID-19 infection is one reason for the boost.

A graph shared by Steam, and which you can see in the picture here, shows that the number of active users also exceeded 19 million users on March 17.

As many users said on reddit, this would be the perfect moment for Steam to launch a new sale, especially as so many people stay home and have more time to play games.

According to official data provided by Steam, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was the most played game on the platform, with its peak today reaching 971,220 connected users. Dota 2 and PUBG are the next most popular choices during these difficult times.

The coronavirus outbreak

The coronavirus outbreak keeps making more and more victims across the world, so a growing number of companies is recommending employees to stay home to avoid the risk of infection. In the United States, all tech giants, including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, have asked workers to work from home when possible.

Furthermore, many have already canceled their tech conferences, moving to online-only versions that would basically witness the announcements released as part of a livestream without any risk of infection.

At the time of writing, there are over 182,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with over 7,100 deaths. Nearly 80,000 people have already recovered and there are 95,692 currently-infected patients, with over 6,100 said to be in a critical condition.
