The 2.0 Alpha version of the game is now out

Star Citizen is the biggest crowdfunding project ever attempted and it’s also one of the most expected space sims. The game just passed the $100 million milestone, and it looks like it’s still growing strong.

Star Citizen is developed by a studio named Cloud Imperium Games and is headed by the famous Chris Roberts. At least, he used to be famous and now he’s famous once more. His name is synonymous with space sims like Wing Commander, for example.

He made a couple more games. The first one is called Starlancer, which was released a long time ago and was published by Microsoft, and the second one was called Freelancer. Unfortunately, he had a falling out with Microsoft because he wanted to do too much and the technology for his ideas simply didn’t exist. He left the project early in its infancy, but Freelancer is still one of the best space sims ever made.

Star Citizen is not even nearly done

Chris Roberts’ problem is that he wants to do too much. He wants to have it all. He imagined a game in which the entire universe is available to users. People should be able to fly with ships, land on planets, and even engage in first-person firefights. As you can imagine, this is a huge task.

That is the reason why after several years of development the studio finally announced the release of Alpha 2.0. It’s a big update, and it finally allows users to test the FPS part of the game, but it feels like it’s only a small piece of what it should be.

The good news is that Star Citizen is separated into the online part, sort of like an MMO (you only pay once), and a single-player part, named Squadron 42 (the same as the squadron in Starlancer). This single-player will feature some great actors like Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, and a few others.

As it stands right now, there is no release date for the final version of Star Citizen, and it’s not clear just how advanced this latest Alpha really is in the grand scheme of thing.
