The split will be made on February 14, on Valentine's Day

Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are going their separate ways starting February 14, developers announced on the website.

Star Citizen is an online space sim at its core, but the developers from Roberts Space Industries have said right from the start that they want to have a powerful single-player campaign. In fact, they got some amazing actors for the single player, like Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Mark Strong, Andy Serkys, and many others.

This was a really good choice for them and it's easy to see why. We already have a space sim out there, Elite Dangerous, that lacks a proper single-player campaign. It has a story hidden somewhere inside the logs and missions, but it's not a proper single-player experience. Roberts Space Industries took a different route and will provide the single player as a standalone title under the name Squadron 42.

Standalone and optional

Players will be able to get Star Citizen with an optional Squadron 42 module, or they will be able to buy the Squadron 42 game if they just want that.

"At the December livestream, we announced that Squadron 42 and Star Citizen will be split into two separate packages in the near future. To update on this: the split will occur on February 14th. Squadron 42 will be available as either a stand alone game or an optional addon for Star Citizen rather than be included by default. If you want to lock in both games for the lowest possible price, consider pledging before this deadline," the announcement reads.

The above-mentioned deadline refers to a package named "SQUADRON 42 PLEDGE" that includes the Star Citizen and Squadron 42 titles, along with a ship named AURORA MR. This package is sold now for just $54 (€50), but this offer will most likely change after February 14.
