Project Athia is one of the elusive titles showcased by Sony during its PlayStation 5 event back in June. The game is published and developed by Square Enix, but aside from that, little to no details have been revealed by the Japanese company.

The reveal trailer suggests Project Athia is an open-world game and we've just a confirmation about that. Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda said that the Project Athia is an open-world game (via Game's Talk):

Project Athia, a game we are investing in for the PlayStation 5, will be an open-world game where users will be able to freely travel around the game world. With the PlayStation 5, we have been able to add better light reflections with ray tracing technology, as well as increase the graphical capabilities, to the point where even when comparing it to the PC screens, there are barely any differences. We have harnessed this feature to create something stunningly detailed.

We plan to balance our game development on titles that fit our company’s characteristics, including smartphone games and cloud games. We will definitely not give up development for high-end consoles like the PS5 and other ones, because these are at the forefront of technology.”

Project Athia will be launched on PC and PlayStation 5, but it's still early in development, which is why Square Enix didn't reveal too many details about the upcoming game. Even so, we've learned that Gary Whitta, known for his work on The Book of Eli, After Earth, and Rogue One, will be leading Project Athia's writing team.

From what we've seen in the teaser, Square Enix's Project Athia shows quite a lot of potential, it's just that we need some gameplay footage before being sure of anything. What we do know for sure is that everything related to the story will come out top-notch considering that Gary Whitta is overseeing the project.
