Spotlight Collection is Microsoft’s new feature exclusive to Windows 11 and whose purpose is to bring the famous Windows Spotlight right to the desktop.

In other words, with Spotlight Collection users are getting new wallpapers on a regular basis, therefore making the desktop feel a lot more dynamic thanks to high-resolution backgrounds.

At this point, however, Spotlight Collection is still in the early testing phase, so it’s available exclusively for users enrolled in the Windows Insider program.

The most recent build shipped to Dev users, however, comes with additional refinements to get Spotlight Collection a step closer to the broad availability.

Windows 11 build 22523, which is the last preview build of the year, makes the first image after Whitehaven Beach to enable faster on the desktop, while also adding new icons to the context menu entries.

“After enabling spotlight collection, your first image (after Whitehaven Beach) should arrive a little faster now. Added icons to the spotlight collection context menu entries,” Microsoft explains.

No ETA for production devices

On the other hand, Spotlight collection also comes with a glitch of its own, and users could encounter it after installing a new preview build. The company says it’s already working on a fix, and it should be ready when the next preview build of Windows 11 goes live in January.

“If you’re using spotlight collection, the current image does not currently migrate on upgrade, which may leave you with a black desktop background after upgrading to this build. This should be addressed in the next flight,” Microsoft says.

At this point, there’s no estimate as to when Spotlight Collection could go live for production devices already running Windows 11, but more information on this front should be offered at some point in 2022 when the development of this feature reaches a more advanced stage.
