Sony Mobile silently launched the controversial Xperia Z3+ smartphone in the United States. The Japanese company said it would avoid the US market for the time being, possibly due to the fierce competition.

While the smartphone was available in the US from authorized resellers, they were not offering US warranty for the sold devices.

However, beginning this week Sony fans will be able to purchase the Xperia Z3+ directly from the company's US online store, which offers warranty for the device.

The Xperia Z3+ is a high-end smartphone, so it's available at Sony Online Store for $500 outright, but customers receive the unlocked version.

Customers will be able to choose between black and white color versions, but additional options might be available in the coming weeks.

Only compatible with GSM carriers

It's important to understand that the Sony Xperia Z3+ will only work with GSM carriers in the United States, so if your carrier is Verizon or Sprint, then the smartphone is not compatible.

The Xperia Z3+ has been available on the market for a long time. It got released in Japan as Xperia Z4, but it's mostly known as Xperia Z3+ because it's not a major upgrade over the previous Sony flagship smartphone.

The handset includes Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset that packs a 2GHz octa-core processor. There's also an Adreno 430 graphics processing unit and 3GB of RAM inside.

Sony Xperia Z3+ comes with 32GB of storage that can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card slot. Another selling point of the phone is the 20.7-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, LED flash, and 4K video recording.

The Xperia Z3+ is IP68 certified (dust proof and water resistant) and sports a 5.2-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution.

Last but not least, the high-end smartphone comes preloaded with Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system right out of the box, but Sony confirmed an Android 6.0 Marshmallow update would be available in the coming months.
