Last week when we reviewed the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, we described it as a marvelous combination of industrial design and top hardware, praising the mirror-like body of the phone not only for the look, but also for the extra strength it provides.

And in a video posted today, YouTuber JerryRigEverything, who throws smartphones in extreme torture tests to determine their strength, confirms that the Xperia XZ Premium is the most durable phone launched by Sony, despite its glossy appearance.

Basically, Gorilla Glass 5 and some smart design choices implemented by Sony are what make the phone pretty impressive, especially when it comes to bending tests.

A mirror that can’t break. Literally

First of all, it’s important to note that while on previous models Sony used plastic for the camera lenses that was pretty easily scratchable, the company picked glass this time and it really pays off. Furthermore, both the front and the back are covered in Gorilla Glass 5, and the flash is hiding under the glass as well for a more consistent and clean look on the back, but also for extra protection.

As far as the bending test is concerned, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium reacted well here as well, with the plastic frame remaining mostly intact and, more importantly, with the screen still working. The plastic side rails, which have been criticized by many, offer extra flexibility, though they are prone to scratches and other physical damages from the side.

All in all, the Xperia XZ Premium survived the test in a pretty good manner, showing that Sony has indeed learned from its past mistakes and managed to make its flagship a much more durable phone. After all, it costs nearly $800, so since it comes with the best hardware around at this point, while not offering extra strength as well? The Xperia XZ is a mirror that can’t break. Literally.
