Ahead of its release in Europe, Sony Xperia M5 is now receiving a major operating system update that will bump it to Android 5.1 Lollipop. The update is available for the dual-SIM version of Xperia M5 as well.

According to XperiaBlog, Android 5.1 Lollipop for Xperia M5 is about 600MB in size, which is why it's recommended to download it via Wi-Fi network rather than use your mobile data allowance.

It's also worth mentioning that the massive update also contains the Android security patch for the month of January. The same update has been released by Google for its Nexus devices early this month.

Most handset makers promised to bring these security patch updates to some of its most popular Android smartphones, but not all devices will receive it each month.

Samsung Galaxy smartphones are getting these security updates on a monthly basis as well though they usually arrive a few weeks after Google makes them available to Nexus users.

It's nice to know that Sony is taking care of its mid-range lineup as well, as the Japanese company has decided that Xperia M5 and Xperia M5 Dual should be getting a January security patch update as well.

Improvements to volume control, new SmartWatch 3 features

Sony Mobile hasn't published an official changelog for this update, but system update notifies users about some of the most important improvements included, such as the ability to take pictures from the camera using Sony SmartWatch 3.

Furthermore, the update contains improvements to volume and silent mode control, as well as more control of user's alerts.

Sony Mobile also notes that updating your Xperia M5 to Android 5.1 Lollipop will not wipe up your data stored on the phone. Also, the Japanese company confirms that Xperia M5 and Xperia M5 Dual owners can also download the update via PC.

Sony Xperia M5 will be available for purchase in European countries from this month. The dual-SIM version hasn't bee confirmed yet, but it might hit shelves in some countries on the continent.

Sadly, it's unclear whether or not both Xperia M5 smartphones will receive an Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade in the coming months.
