14 DAY TRIAL // Although Sony has been avoiding showing the final design of the PlayStation 5, at least we know what the new controller will look like. The Japanese company recently unveiled the wireless game controller for PlayStation 5, which promises to deliver “a new feeling of immersion to players.”
Unlike current-gen controllers that adopt a more traditional monocolored design, the so-called DualSense features a two-toned theme. More importantly, based on the discussion with developers, Sony decided to adopt haptic feedback, which adds various sensations the player can feel when playing games.
Also, the controller includes adaptive triggers in the L2 and R2 buttons, allowing players to feel the tension of their action, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow. Since haptic feedback usually drains a lot of battery, Sony says that it has taken into consideration ways to maintain strong battery life for DualSense's rechargeable battery and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.
“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. Furthermore, the Share button has been removed and replaced with a new one called Create. Another important new feature that all the previous PlayStation controllers lacked is the built-in microphone array included in DualSense, which enables players to chat with friends without a headset. There are probably a lot of other important improvements over the current-gen controllers, but these are the only details revealed by Sony at the moment.
