In the past year, more and more smartphone manufacturers presented their latest phones without the famous 3.5mm headphone jack. Motorola, Apple and others started a trend, and it seems that more and more manufacturers are following suit, including Samsung with its upcoming Galaxy S8.

The good news is Sony’s Xperia series won’t be joining the group of smartphones without a 3.5mm headphone jack. Company executives stated during a press event in Japan last month that Sony would not ditch the 3.5mm jack in its upcoming phones for the foreseeable future, according to a recent report.

Instead, the company will be focusing on providing improvements to its proprietary high-resolution audio products and services, some of which might be showcased during CES 2017.

Sony will keep the 3.5mm headphone jack until 2018

Sony is one of the oldest smartphone makers out there and this report indicates that the company won’t make any changes to the headphone jack on Xperia phones at least until 2018.

Many flagships released this year didn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack, including the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. The removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack leaves more room for other ports and components, considering that the USB Type-C port can be successfully used for audio output.

The market is somewhat divided when it comes to the 3.5mm headphone jack, as some iPhone fans were displeased with Apple’s decision to remove the jack on the latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, but the wireless earphones AirPods do offer some distinct advantages compared to the tangle-prone wired headphones.

One of the biggest smartphone makers right now, Samsung, is thinking of ditching the headphone jack in its upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S8. It remains to be seen whether or not the 3.5mm headphone jack will become extinct on the smartphone market.
