A few days ago, we reported to you about Sony's change in policy regarding its waterproof smartphones and tablets.

Basically, the Japanese company recommends customers who use its Xperia family of smartphones and tablets to avoid using them underwater since the IP rating that these devices were tagged with has been achieved in lab conditions while they were in standby mode.

So, those who purchased any of Sony's Xperia smartphones that have been said to be waterproof just to be able to take pictures underwater should now think twice before doing that.

Especially that the Japanese company has just issued an official statement concerning the new change in waterproof policy. Here is a short excerpt from this statement:

“Sony Mobile is committed to providing the highest standards of product quality and customer service. Xperia models that feature levels of dust and water-resistance are validated independently and based on Ingress Protection (IP) standards agreed and used across the industry.

“We have every confidence in the qualities of Xperia devices, which are built to exacting technical standards and are designed to perform to high standards in normal usage.”

Warranty terms remain unchanged

Furthermore, the company has also announced that it has updated its marketing visuals in order to reflect the new changes in waterproof policy and allow a better communication with customers.

According to Sony, “The warranty terms provided for out products remain the same and any customers concerns will continue to be considered on a case by case basis in line with these terms.”

Now that Sony Mobile has come out with an official statement that strongly advises customers not to use their smartphones underwater, Xperia owners should follow the company's suggestions even though the warranty terms remain unchanged.

“The recent changes to guidance we provide to our customers are designed to more clearly illustrate the best ways to protect devices in day-to-day usage,” Sony concludes.
