Sony releases webcam software for its cameras

With so many people still staying home and working remotely because of obvious reasons, webcams have become must-have equipment to stay in touch with co-workers and the rest of the company.

Good guy Sony knows this very well, so the company has released dedicated software that allows you to convert many of its cameras to simple webcams that can be used on Windows 10.

“Imaging Edge Webcam lets you connect your Sony camera to your personal computer, and use the camera as a webcam with a livestreaming/web conferencing service,” Sony explains.

Certainly, using a large camera as a webcam isn’t necessarily the most convenient solution, but if you urgently need a webcam with high-quality video, this new application comes in really handy.

There are several things that you need to know before setting up a Sony camera as a webcam on your Windows 10 device.

A reboot is required

First of all, only Windows 10 64-bit is supported, so no other versions of the OS work. Sony doesn’t specifically say what version of Windows 10 you must be on, but I’m guessing that if you’re running version 2004 (May 2020 Update), you’re good to go.

Then, not all Sony cameras can work with this software, but you can check out the full list of compatible models on this page.

“The aspect ratio is automatically set to 16:9. It will remain set to 16:9 after using Imaging Edge Webcam, so set it to the previous value if necessary,” the company warns.

A reboot of the device is required after installing the application on Windows 10.

Sony also recommends customers to run a fully up-to-date installation of Windows 10, which means that all your drivers should also be on the latest versions. Sony’s app includes everything the device needs to correctly identify your camera.
