It's a remake of the original PlayStation console

Sony surprised everyone by announcing the PlayStation Classic, a mini version of the original console, with 20 games included by default.

If you’re an older gamer, you’re going to remember a time when the industry was revolutionized by the introduction of the PlayStation console. The games that we played on the original PlayStation are still with us today, and they helped shape an entire generation of people.

To be fair, re-launching a console is not exactly an original idea. Nintendo already did this with the Super NES Classic Edition system, but we can’t really complain. Sony’s initiative might have been a surprise, but the community is sure to love the new console.

The hardware is still a mystery

While Sony is saying that the new mini-console imitates the look and feel of the old version, it’s clear that the hardware is not the same. Let’s not forget that almost 25 years passed since the initial release, so we’re bound to see some improvements.

“Today, we are so excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come preloaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3 and Wild Arms. The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring the same controllers and similar packaging,” says Sony in the official announcement.

Of course, there is no indication on what’s inside, but since it comes with 20 included games, we can guess that it has a storage solution. And Sony is promising that more games will be made available, which only means it has network connectivity as well.

For now, we only know that it has HDMI output and two controllers, which should work very well with local multiplayer within compatible titles. The launch date for PlayStation Classic has been set for December 3rd, and it should cost $99 (recommended price.)
