Some time ago, before “Sons of Anarchy” wrapped its 7-season, critically acclaimed run on FX, series creator and writer Kurt Sutter smashed fans’ hopes by saying that there was no chance a spinoff could ever be made, because this type of shows only worked with procedural dramas.

SOA wasn’t a procedural drama, it was a family drama, a biker version of Hamlet, a story of violence and revenge, and of wanting to do the right thing - and failing.

Sutter has had a change of heart, Deadline confirms. A spinoff of sorts is currently in the works, with plans to air it on FX, home of Jax Teller and his biker gang.

However, before you get your hopes too high, you should know that it’s probably not what you would have had in mind for it: it will play as a prequel focusing on the Mayans motorcycle club. The Mayans were business and crime partners of the Sons, but they weren’t central characters.

Fans of the series were probably hoping for a prequel into the start of SAMCRO, and how founders John Teller and Piney Winston came up with the idea for the MC and what they had wanted to achieve with it.

For the time being, no other details about the spinoff are known, but since the project is still in its very early stages, my guess is that it will be another while, maybe more than a year, before we see anything concrete come out of it.
