Piece together clues to learn about the fallen Earth

These last years were crazy for the gaming industry, as more games are now released each month than there were for an entire year not long ago. With so many games being released every day, it's hard to find those that are worthy of our time and money. But every once in a while we stumble upon a “hidden gem” that surely deserves a place in the spotlight.

Some Distant Memory is an upcoming story-driven exploration game developed by Galvanic Games. The game is scheduled for release in 2019 for PC and Nintendo Switch.

The premise reminds me of a point-and-click adventure game called Primordia, where you play as an android in a post-apocalyptic world. Similarly, Galvanic Games' upcoming title puts players in the shoes of the Professor, a future archaeologist who must piece together clues that reveal the mystery of fallen Earth and the event that led to the end of civilization.

Some Distant Memory is set 300 years after the collapse of civilization, and the trailer attached to the unveiling announcement shows the core gameplay. As an archaeologist, you search the desolate remains of Earth with her AI companion.

You'll be able to digitally recreate moments from the past, and learn the touching stories of those who lived on Earth before their world was destroyed. Scanning photos, journals, and other items in the environment will help you find out more about the now-defunct civilization.

According to developers, Some Distant Memory is a “heartfelt story about relationships, creativity, and the importance of remembering those that are gone.” From the trailer, we're inclined to believe this is a eulogy for humanity, even though a handful of people remain on Earth.

Some Distant Memory is one of those games where it's not the destination, but the journey that counts, just like life is.
