14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft has just released picture-in-picture support for the Windows 10 version of Skype ahead of the public launch that should take place once the Creators Update goes live for everyone.
Microsoft’s Jen Gentleman has announced on Twitter that the new Skype Preview version is 11.12.96.0 on Windows 10 build 15048 and is the first one adding the officially-called CompactOverlay, which is the fancier name for the aforementioned picture-in-picture feature.
Starting with this version, users are basically capable of continuing their calls and working in other apps without actually closing Skype, making it possible to have an always-on-screen window in a screen corner to keep an eye on the conversation.
First announced with Windows 10 build 15031, picture-in-picture support is projected to become available with the upcoming Creators Update due in April, with Microsoft inviting developers to add support for this feature in their own apps.

Furthermore, the Redmond-based software giant promised to add it to its own apps first, so after updating Movies & TV with Compact Overlay, the firm is now bringing it in Skype as well.
“Some tasks don’t require the user’s full attention but is perfect to leave at the corner of the screen so we’re introducing a new compact overlay mode for UWA app developers,” Microsoft explains.
“When an app window enters compact overlay mode it’ll be shown above other windows so it won’t get blocked. The best part is that compact overlay windows work just like normal windows in all other ways so app developers can tailor the experience with what they already know.”
This new Skype feature is only available for insiders for the time being, but it’s just a matter of time until everyone gets it. The Creators Update is projected to launch next month, with the final RTM build to be compiled in late March, so we’re only a few weeks away from the moment when retail users should get all the stable goodies as well.
