Rumor has it that Microsoft could kill Band wearable

Microsoft was expected to launch the third-generation Band smart wristband in October, but instead, the company might actually cancel the project altogether, as its plan to bring Windows 10 IoT on the new model failed.

People with knowledge of the matter revealed that Microsoft originally planned to launch an all-new Band this year, with Windows 10 IoT and improved design. But given the fact that the experiment failed, and the firm couldn’t find a way to make Windows 10 run smoothly on the Band, it could either postpone the release or even cancel it completely.

Fans of the Microsoft Band who expected a third-generation model this year, however, are very disappointed with such news and have now launched a petition (via SuperSite) to call for the company to keep improving the Band and keep the project alive.

Slightly-improved model

The petition is still new and has some 200 supporters, but there’s no doubt that it could get more signatures in the coming days, especially if more reports regarding Band’s demise are released.

“This comes as a shock and great disappointment to many happy Microsoft Band users, Microsoft fans and all those that were patiently awaiting the release of Microsoft Band 3 with Windows 10 IoT and water-resistance,” the petition reads.

The author then goes into detail to explain why the Microsoft Band needs to survive, explaining that the third-generation model should come with Windows 10 and waterproofing anyway.

“Microsoft Band is the perfect match for active people with amazing and unmatched fitness capabilities and the world-class support and integration on all mobile and desktop platforms. With powerful connection to the Microsoft Health platform, Microsoft Band is a truly unique and one-of-a-kind experience for its users,” it adds.

Rumor has it that Microsoft might not kill off the Band, but instead of a completely redesigned third generation, it could launch a slightly improved model featuring just minor revisions and the same firmware version as the existing one.
