In April this year, the blogosphere and social media were being flooded with negative comments about Selena Gomez’s weight gain, after photos from her vacation in Mexico emerged online. Even though she did her best to shut her haters down in a polite manner, Selena admits: she was very hurt to read those things about herself online.

However, she chose not to let haters ruin her day, so instead of dwelling too much on the negative feelings, she channeled them into her music. Her new album, “Revival,” will be out in music stores starting October 9.

Haters can’t bring Selena Gomez down

Speaking with Extra to promote her voice work in “Hotel Transylvania 2,” Selena also touches a bit on her upcoming album, of which she declares with passion that it’s the best work she’s done so far. No wonder she’s so eager to have it out there, so fans can share the experience with her.

This spring, she explains, she and her favorite producers and collaborators went to Mexico on a trip that was a vacation but also doubled as a brain-storming session. They already had some tracks laid out, but they had no idea yet the direction the album was taking, so they needed to come up with a good concept.

It came to them in the aftermath of the fat-shaming controversy, which started as soon as paparazzi photos of a heavier Selena in a swimsuit hit the web: the album would be called “Revival” and would be a platform for Selena to have her voice heard, to tell her side of the story.

“And so I was in Mexico and I was just feeling all of this stuff and I would be lying to you if I said it didn't kind of hurt my feelings, but I kind of channeled that into my music,” Selena says of her reaction to seeing she was being fat-shamed online.

“I felt like everybody was saying so much, and I'm like, ‘I need to say something,’ even if it has nothing to do with that. My songs on the record are Survivors, are Kill ‘Em with Kindness, Rise, it's all geared towards me trying to be heard,” she continues, stressing that she won’t be responding to negativity with negativity.

“Revival” will be Selena’s most personal work to date

Selena’s admission that she took the fat-shaming experience and used it for inspiration for her upcoming studio material comes to add weight to her previous comments, about how “Revival” would be her most personal work to date.

She’s already released 2 singles off it, “Good for You” and “Same Old Love,” and both are said to be inspired by her on-and-off romance with Justin Bieber. “Good for You” got an official music video yesterday, which you can see in full below.
