Microsoft releases Windows 10 build 18841 to Skip Ahead

Microsoft has released another preview build of the April 2020 Windows 10 update to Windows insiders enrolled in the Skip Ahead ring.

Shipped as build 18841 and codenamed 20H1, this new update doesn’t come with any breaking changes, but instead paves the way for more substantial changes that should follow in the coming months.

While you can see the full changelog in the box after the jump, I think it’s more important to look at what each ring in the Windows Insider program now does after the release of Windows 10 20H1 preview builds.

What ring is getting which build?

First of all, it’s this Skip Ahead ring that is being provided with April 2020 Update builds. Users who are part of this ring are testing improvements that will be part of the Windows 10 feature update supposed to go live for everyone in the spring of 2020.

Then, it’s the Fast ring. Currently getting Windows 10 19H1 or April 2019 Update preview builds, the Fast ring will switch to early 19H2 improvements when the next feature update for Windows 10 is rolled out in just a couple of months.

The Slow and Release Preview rings are still on the October 2018 Update, but Microsoft will update both to 19H1 in the coming weeks. The Release Preview ring alone will be used to testing quality updates for the stable version of Windows 10 April 2019 Update.

“We will begin releasing 19H2 bits to Insiders later this spring after we get 19H1 nearly finished and ready; once 19H1 is “nearly finished and ready” we’ll also use the Release Preview ring for previews of drivers and quality updates on 19H1,” Microsoft explains.

Enrolling in the Skip Ahead ring isn’t possible at this time, as Microsoft is offering only limited seats for this channel.
