Called Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Card Premium Edition, this storage device will boast a maximum capacity of 200GB.

By pushing the conventional maximum capacity of 128GB even on older models of SanDisk microSDXCs, the company wishes to further extend the available space video and photo enthusiasts will have available on their cameras.

Conforming to the UHS-I and Class 10 standards, the new microSDXC will have a transfer rate of 90MB/sec corresponding to full HD movie shooting on DSLRs or digital video cameras, in other words it can transfer 1200 photos per minute.

The new SD microSD card comes with a conversion adapter and a "memry zone" app which monitors a phone's internal storage and alerts the user when a user-defined threshold has been reached. It will automatically transfer older photos and videos to the microSD card automatically to free storage space.

MicroSD cards only survive a set number of reads and writes, about 100.000 cycles but SanDisk believes this new microSD card will last much longer, although keeping in mind this is a 200GB storage device, that threshold limit won't go much higher than casual.

Perfect for photographers and HD filming but still not 4K ready

All in all, this is a perfect card for smartphones and especially DSLRs as more and more cameras will start shooting in 4K and they will need larger and especially faster cards to cope with the increased resolution. And while the speed is great, some will feel that portable SSDs connected with micro USB 3.0 cables to modern cameras will fare much better in case of UHD filming. For example, this card fares just under the slowest 4K transfer camera available on the market of 100Mbps, the Panasonic GH4.

However, this is SanDisk's first step to developing 4K ready cards that are the size of a thumbnail and can hold enormous storage sizes. However, it's better to wait a bit, as unless you are a true mobile or microSD enthusiast, the starting price of $300 might let you down. As time passes, this should be a perfect bargain for any filming platform you might have.
