Quad HD displays that support 2560 x 1440 pixels were something unimaginable a few years ago, but right now all flagship smartphones pack one.

Technological breakthroughs are made each year, which is why we're forced to renew all our electronics once several years or sometime even faster if we want to stay in touch with the progress.

That's why Samsung, one of the largest mobile display suppliers, is now researching a new technology that might bring 11K display into the smartphone world.

ETNews reports Samsung Display plans to develop the world's first 11K resolution display. But the South Korean handset maker won't be alone in this endeavor, as Samsung will be working together with industry and education ministers.

The government will invest no less than $26.5 million along a 5-year period. The announcement was made during 10th Display Field National Research Development Business General Workshop.

Samsung has already started the development process for the world's first 11K display more than a month ago, along with 13 South Korean and foreign companies.

8K displays are already in the prototype phase

According to the same reports, Samsung Display is in charge with the project, which aims to release a technology that would allow 2250ppi-level 11K display to be packed in smartphones.

Given the high-resolution, the 11K display would also be able to show the colors in the highest, which can make rendering of 3D effects much easier to achieve.

“We are hoping that we are able to show such technologies at Pyeongchang Olympics if there is a progress in developing technologies.

“Although some might think that 11K as ‘over specification’ that consumers do not need, this can work as a basis for Korean display industry take another leap if related materials and parts improve through this,” said Executive Director Chu Hye Yong of Samsung Display.

So, should we expect the next Galaxy S smartphone to include an 11K display in the near future? Well, not necessarily since this project will probably last about 5 years beginning this month. But it's nice to know that someone is already working on it.
