Apple is planning to take the wraps off three different iPhone models this year, one of which would be a more affordable configuration boasting Face ID facial recognition and giving up on Touch ID just like the iPhone X.

With analysts expecting this particular iPhone model to account for a large share of the sales recorded by the new-generation smartphones, Samsung is looking into upgrading its more affordable devices as well in order to cope with the expected growing demand for iPhones.

One way to do this could be bringing premium features to budget models, and according to recent findings, the Galaxy Grand Prime Plus could be the first one to benefit from this new strategy.

Launch expected in September

Basically, what Samsung plans to do is upgrade this device with an iris scanner, a feature that has until now been available exclusively on the company’s flagships. If this is the case, Samsung hopes it can deal with the arrival of the new iPhone using a similar approach like Apple. This means Samsung’s more affordable model would have iris recognition, while the cheaper iPhone would boast Face ID facial recognition.

While the focus would be put on biometrics, Samsung plans to offer rather modest hardware upgrades to the new Galaxy Grand Prime Plus, like a 5.5-inch display and an Exynos 7870 processor.

If this is the case, Apple’s lower-cost iPhone would still be considered a better buy, especially given the strong brand that the Cupertino-based tech giant relies on across the world.

Apple is projected to take the wraps off its new iPhone generation in September, while Samsung could introduce the new device during the same month at IFA in Berlin. The most recent speculation, however, suggests Apple could hold back the more affordable iPhone for at least one month in order to prevent cannibalization in its new device lineup.
