14 DAY TRIAL // Not much time has passed since Apple released its latest iPhone and there’s already talk about the upcoming phone from the Cupertino company. Some recent reports say that Samsung is most likely to become the exclusive supplier of OLED displays for the iPhone 8.
South Korean news outlet Business Korea reports that Samsung will be supplying organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display panels for iPhones for the next two years at least. Samsung will be the sole supplier of such screens for the iPhone 8, which will become the first-ever iPhone with an OLED display.
Samsung Display has a stunning 95% share of the smartphone OLED screens market, which means that if Apple does intend to incorporate such a screen on the upcoming iPhone, the South Korean company will most likely be the sole manufacturer.
Other companies like LG Display and Japan Display account for the remaining market share, but only Samsung Display is capable of producing curved OLED screens at a larger scale. LG Display and Japan Display will be creating liquid crystal screens for flat iPhones set to arrive next year.
Samsung Display to make 100 million OLED screens for iPhone 8
Korea Herald indicates that Samsung Display could produce up to 100 million curved OLED displays for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8. The South Korean company will reportedly supply flexible OLED screens, similar to the ones found in LG G Flex phones. And aside from the iPhone 8, Samsung Display is also expected to produce curved-edge OLED screens for the upcoming Galaxy S8.
Apple intends to use plastic units and not glass OLED displays for its iPhone 8, since plastic allows for curved and flexible screens.
On the other hand, Apple is said to be aiming at gradually reducing reliance on Samsung Display for components, and the Cupertino company is reportedly working with LG Display and Google on developing foldable panels for upcoming smartphones to arrive in 2018. Samsung is also working on foldable devices to arrive in the same year.
