New form factors coming this year, it seems

Now that the Galaxy S21 is alive and kicking, Samsung can concentrate on what’s next for the company. And as it turns out, there’s something big planned in the short term, with the South Koreans recently teasing new “form factor designs” that it can’t detail right now.

CFO and president Yoon-Ho Choi said earlier this week that Samsung wants to continue to invest in foldable devices, yet this is something that perfectly makes sense given the South Koreans are a leader in this market.

“In 2021, we will continue to strengthen our Z Fold and Z Flip lineup with the aim of popularizing the foldable form factor. In the case of the Z Fold, it will solidify its positioning in the super premium segment especially highlighting the usability it offers with a large screen, for example, for entertainment or productivity, cases,” Choi said.

“For the Z Flip, that will aim to satisfy and target the needs of the millennials, as well as female users with its differentiated stylish design and also competitive prices.”

The fate of the Note is still undecided

New foldable devices are expected to launch in the summer, possibly as early as June, but one particular model that is yet to be confirmed is the Galaxy Note21.

People familiar with the matter said the Note lineup would be retired, all because Samsung wants to streamline its offering and avoid launching redundant models. Now that the support for S Pen is available in the Galaxy S family of products, the Note barely has a purpose, so it’s believed Samsung wants to discontinue the device completely.

It’s believed the company is also working on a more affordable foldable device, which could eventually launch as a FE model. The FE Samsung devices, which stand for Fan Edition, are more affordable versions of premium smartphones, so with such a project, the company might want to aim for the masses with the foldable lineup of products.
