New data provided by Counterpoint Research shows that Samsung continues to be the number one phone maker in Europe despite a major decline in shipments.

The South Korean company leads the market with a share of 35 percent in the first quarter of 2022, down from 37 percent in the same quarter a year ago.

The decline recorded by the company reached 16 percent year-over-year, but despite this drop, Samsung continues to be the number phone maker in Europe.

As for Apple, the Cupertino-based firm’s market share increased from 24 percent to 25 percent, but this isn’t necessarily good news. The company recorded a 6 percent decline in iPhone shipments, though it remains the runner-up in the European charts.

Apple currently the runner-up

The European market as a whole went down 12 percent year-on-year in Q1 2022, and Counterpoint says that several factors generated this change, including the lockdowns in China, the rising inflation, and the component shortages.

“Both Samsung and Apple shipments declined annually in Q1 2022, despite launches of new devices: Samsung with its latest flagship Galaxy S22 series and Apple with its mid-tier iPhone SE update. Xiaomi and OPPO, meanwhile, continued to suffer from component shortages, although both are showing early signs of recovery. Bucking the trend in Europe, realme was the only top-five vendor to register an annual growth in shipments in Q1 2022, and it remains one of the region’s fastest growing major brands (only Nokia HMD and Google grew faster, albeit from a much smaller base),” Counterpoint explains.

The biggest increase in Q1 2022 year-on-year was recorded by realme, whose market share increased from 2 percent to 4 percent, thanks to a growth that reached 67 percent during the quarter. Xiaomi recorded the biggest drop – down 36 percent YoY, despite the company still controlling 14 percent of the market.
