A Samsung patent describing an edge-to-edge smartphone with all the sensors and the camera placed under the screen has been published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on October 24, as discovered by LetsGoDigital.

First of all, the patent details a full-screen front panel, "As a user would like to view various contents with a larger screen than that of a conventional device, a display area increases; and, in order to enhance the aesthetic sense, a display is disposed at an entire front surface of the electronic device."

Moreover, the smartphone's front camera will be set directly in the middle of the printed circuit board (PCB), using a hole in the display of the device for the camera lens but with the cover panel being left intact.

The patented smartphone also features a number of sensors and components set right under the cover panel, with the microphone, fingerprint scanner, the camera, and a transparent antenna all being located under the front cover glass.

According to the "Antenna device and electronic device comprising same" patent, although the unusual transparent antenna will be set between the display and the cover panel, its performance will not be hindered.

The patented smartphone device with an edge-to-edge display has all the sensors and the front camera under the cover panel

"In an antenna device and an electronic device including the same according to various embodiments of the present invention, by enabling an antenna to have unity through a processing while securing an antenna performance by reducing the effect of an extended display, the aesthetic sense can be enhanced," says Samsung's WIPO patent.

In addition, Samsung has also added to the patent a hologram device designed to allow the smartphone users to project 3D image content in the air using either a light interference or a projector.

"The hologram device may show a stereoscopic image in the air using interference of light. The projector may project light on a screen to display an image," according to the patent. "The screen may be positioned, for example, at the inside or the outside of the electronic device."

All these deviations from the norm follow a multitude of reports and rumors saying that Samsung's Galaxy S10 will be an unconventional device with features and components not found in other smartphones on the market.
