14 DAY TRIAL // Samsung unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7, just a few hours ago, but the company also released a new Gear VR to go along with it. The new headset comes with some improvements over its predecessor, but it does work on previously released Galaxy devices.
Samsung says the Galaxy Note 7 provides the “best-in-class entertainment,” as the curved 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED screen manages to deliver an immersive picture on a handset. The phone can be used for streaming HDR video and features Game Pack, with new user benefits and game titles. Game Pack is available in Google Play Store.
Moreover, the new Gear VR powered by Oculus comes with a new design that brings changes to controls and welcomes a new Home button. The touchpad comes with more room for navigating in VR, and the padding that presses on the user's face is thicker, making the headset more comfortable than its predecessor.
The new Gear VR provides a wider field of view
Samsung has also made the strap longer on the new Gear VR, and it has announced that its field of view has been widened from 96 degrees on the previous Gear VR to 101 degrees. This would make it easier for developers to create videos and games that feel a bit more immersive.
The new Gear VR weighs in at 345g and comes with an accelerometer, gyrometer, and proximity sensor. It's also available in blue-black color and is compatible with the Galaxy Note7, S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+.
The reason Samsung felt the need to develop a new Gear VR headset for the Galaxy Note 7 is that the latter comes with USB Type-C port, which means that it's incompatible with VT headsets previously released by the company. The USB Type-C connector on the headset can be swapped for an included micro-USB connector so that the Gear VR would work with other Samsung Galaxy smartphones.
The Gear VR for Galaxy Note 7 is already available for pre-order and will go on sale starting August 19, the same day the phone comes to shelves.
