Buy a gold smartwatch without spending a fortune

If you’re in the market for a gold smartwatch but don’t want to spend $17,000 on Apple’s special-edition Watch, you’re in luck.

Samsung has just announced new editions of the Gear S2 Classic today, which will come in 18k rose gold and platinum versions and will be available at a shockingly small price.

First of all, availability. Originally presented at CES earlier this year, the “new” watch will first go on sale in China these days. General availability in other countries will happen as soon as possible, Samsung guarantees.

Now in case you’re wondering what’s with the quotes when we said “new,” you should know that the gold watch is basically the same as the original Gear S2. So you have the same watch, the same rotating bezel, the same everything, but with a premium finish.

Possible pricing

Although Samsung hasn’t announced any pricing info on this watch, The Verge has found out that the gold version will be available for about $520 (€480), so it’ll be sold for a lot less than the Apple Watch. Of course, it’ll be twice as expensive as the original model, but it’s a gold smartwatch after all.

As for the difference between the Apple Watch and the Gear S2 rose gold, at least in terms of pricing, there’s one little thing that explains it all. The Apple Watch is made of solid gold, so you actually get the expensive metal there, while the Samsung is manufactured from the same stainless steel, but then plated in gold. And this is why it’s more affordable.

As for the bands, the gold edition comes with an ivory leather band while the platinum is shipped with a black leather version.

More information on pricing information and availability will probably be provided by Samsung in February during the Galaxy S7 launch event because, after all, the smartwatch and the new smartphone would make such a great pair together.
