Huawei exploring the idea too, wants to be the pioneer

The anti-notch struggle is pushing some phone manufacturers to impressive efforts in order to increase the available screen estate without the controversial design element, and more recently, it has emerged that Samsung may have found the solution.

It all comes down to embedding front-facing parts right into the display, and the cameras, for example, would work thanks to very small holes drilled into the glass.

The idea appears to be gaining traction at several other companies, and while Samsung was originally believed to be the pioneer, it now looks like Huawei plans to do the same thing too. And what’s more, the Chinese company wants to be the first doing it.

As revealed on Twitter by mobile leakster Ice Universe, Huawei is already working on a smartphone that comes with holes in the screen, and the launch could take place as soon as the next month.

Samsung planning December unveiling

The timing isn’t surprising. Samsung also wants to unveil its first such phone, the Galaxy A8s, next month, so Huawei hopes it’d steal all the attention by taking the wraps off its device ahead of the South Korean rival.

“Huawei will release the world's first hole-screen mobile phone before the Samsung Galaxy A8s, which will be released in December, but the A8s may also be released in December, so who will start, it will wait and see. Huawei’s offensive against Samsung has never weakened,” the leakster says.

While launching a new feature ahead of the competition may be great for marketing, I think it’s more important for that feature to work correctly, rather than be the first one on the market.

Samsung could use the same approach for the Galaxy S10 lineup expected in the first months of 2019, so sooner or later, this will become a mainstream feature on several high-end devices.
