Patent details how a movable display can cover the camera

Apple launched the iPhone X with the controversial notch, and Samsung was one of the first companies to mock this design idea.

While the South Koreans eventually brought the notch to some of their models, Samsung flagships pioneered another idea relying on a small cutout in the screen that allowed the camera to be embedded into the glass.

And of course, as the technology evolves, Samsung continues to look into more solutions to improve this approach in an attempt to make the camera as less intrusive as possible.

A recent Samsung patent provides us with an early look at how the company wants to make the whole thing happen. And everything relies on a secondary screen that can move inside the phone.

A screen that moves

So technically, how Samsung sees this implementation is quite simple, though it goes without saying that making it work in real life is the challenging part.

In essence, what Samsung wants to create is a punch hole camera that would be covered by a secondary screen covering it when not in use. In other words, you’re looking at the screen but you don’t see the camera module because the display placed just above it covers it completely.

The moment you press the camera icon on the screen, the second display that covers the camera moves down, allowing the camera itself to see through the punch hole. This way, you can use the camera normally, and when returning to the screen, the secondary display comes back into place to cover the camera once again.

Of course, this is just a patent for the time being and there’s no guarantee it would ever make it to mass production, but it’s also the living proof Samsung is seeking new ways to make the camera less intrusive overall.
