14 DAY TRIAL // New data offered by Counterpoint Research shows that Samsung Galaxy S9 has become the top smartphone worldwide, after both models included in this new series topped shipments worldwide in April 2018.
The Samsung Galaxy S9+ and the standard Samsung Galaxy S9 managed to overtake the iPhone X to reach a market share of 2.6 percent each, while Apple’s model fell on third place with 2.3 percent. iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 were next with 2.3 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively.
Counterpoint says that Galaxy S9 posted strong performance in APAC (Asia-Pacific) and NAM (North America) regions, though these are the markets where the much older iPhone 7 also sold well.
Apple is the top company in the charts this time. Surprisingly, the iPhone 6 continues to be a hot seller with no less than 1.4 percent of the shipments during the quarter, while the one-year-old Galaxy S8 is only tenth in the rankings with 1.3 percent. iPhone 7 reached 1.4 percent.
Xiaomi one of the big guys
On the other hand, what’s also worth mentioning is that Xiaomi has become the only company to reach the top 10 beside Apple and Samsung.
“Xiaomi continues to make its presence felt in the top selling smartphones globally and grabbed the sixth and the eighth position with its Redmi 5A and Redmi 5 Plus / Note 5. This is the first time Xiaomi grabbed two positions within the top ten model list. Xiaomi grew both in China and India due to its affordable smartphones,” Counterpoint said.
iPhone X losing share makes sense given that the Galaxy S9 are newer products, thought it’ll be interesting to see how these models perform in the coming months when shipments are expected to reach normal levels. Apple is also working on a new iPhone generation containing three different devices, and they are projected to see daylight in September this year.
