The GSM Association recognized the Galaxy S7 edge as the Best Smartphone in the Best Mobile Handsets and Devices category at the annual Global Mobile Awards during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Samsung’s Vice President of Global Product Strategy, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics Junho Park stated, “We are honored to be recognized for our craftsmanship in design and innovation with the Galaxy S7 edge.”

He added that “This award is a testament to our constant pursuit of excellence as we continue to exceed consumers’ expectations through revolutionary mobile technology.”

The GSM Association is a trade body that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide and consists of 800 mobile operators and a further 300 companies in the industry.

The Galaxy S7 edge competed against Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus

The other nominees for the Best Smartphone award in the Best Mobile Handsets and Devices category were Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus, Google’s Pixel XL, Huawei’s P9, and Motorola’s Moto Z.

Last year, the trusted industry standard for camera and lens image quality measurements and ratings placed the rear camera on the S7 edge as the third best, with the same score as HTC 10 and Xperia X Performance. Google’s Pixel scored the highest in the DxOMark index, a reference for smartphone cameras. The Galaxy S7 edge received this award for its refined design, advanced camera, and outstanding performance.

The award marks a year since the Galaxy S7 edge was announced in February last year, and after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, Samsung relied heavily on this flagship device during the holiday season.

The Galaxy S7 edge is still a powerful smartphone with 4GB of RAM and octa-core Snapdragon 820 SoC. Samsung will soon introduce another flagship device, the Galaxy S8, and its larger variant, the Galaxy S8+, both with dual-edge displays and running the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC. The phones will be announced on March 29 and made available for purchase in April.
