Better camera, more powerful CPU, brighter Always-on display

Samsung's next-generation Galaxy S smartphones have just been unveiled at MWC 2016. The South Korean company has taken Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge's design and refined it to bring to market two new devices that are both solid and stylish at the same time.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge smartphones have been specially developed to meet IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, without having to compromise design.

We still get the same mix of 3D glass and metal that offers a comfy grip on the phones and sleek design with durability.

“We believe in a world that is brighter, sharper, more convenient, and more fun. We strive to deliver on that vision with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge by marrying elegant design with functionality and providing a seamless mobile experience,” said DJ Koh, president of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.

Better everything, except for lack of USB Type-C port

Hardware-wise, Samsung added more powerful chipsets inside the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, so expect them to be packed with either Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 CPUs.

But the most obvious change is the addition of a dual pixel 12-megapixel camera, which packs a 1.44-micron pixel sensor and f/1.7 aperture for better pictures in low-light conditions.

The rear camera is now closer to the thin line of the smartphones, so the bump is less obvious. Due to the dual pixel technology, the camera on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge focuses almost instantly.

Samsung also brings back the microSD card slot, which can be found on the SIM tray. Users can expand the 32GB/64GB storage up to 200GB via microSD card. However, in some markets, the tray can also be used with dual SIM card.

The smartphones also come with better batteries, as Galaxy S7 has been confirmed to include a 3,000 mAh battery while the S7 edge packs a much larger 3,600 mAh battery, both non-removable.

As many of you probably know by now, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge come with 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch displays, respectively. Both have Always-on displays that support Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution.

The only downside seems to be the lack of USB Type-C port, as Samsung has decided that microUSB 2.0 is still a good feature for its flagship smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be available for pre-order beginning next week and will hit shelves starting “mid-March.” Samsung also confirmed that those who pre-order the smartphones in North America and Europe would receive a free Gear VR.
