The rugged version of Galaxy S6 is one of the few high-end Samsung smartphones launched this year that haven't been upgraded to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active was released in the United States at AT&T several months ago, but the smartphone was preloaded with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

The South Korean company did not confirm an Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade for the Galaxy S6 Active, but it did say that the smartphone would eventually receive an Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update.

Today, Samsung has announced on its support website that Galaxy S6 Active is now eligible for an Android 5.1.1 Lollipop upgrade at AT&T.

This is the third Galaxy S6 variant that gets the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, after Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge that received the upgrade more than two months ago.

Security patches and general improvements

There aren't too many details about the changes included in this update, but the South Korean company says that Android 5.1.1 Lollipop should enable Samsung Pay for Galaxy S6 Active owners.

Moreover, the update should also contain a fair share of security patches, bug fixes, and general improvements, which have been pushed to both Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge as well.

If you own the AT&T Galaxy S6 Active, then you should look for firmware version G890AUCU3BOJE by heading to Settings / System / About device / Software update / Check for updates. (You might need to do this multiple times if your smartphone runs an older version of Android).

If a new update is available, it will show up on your screen so that you can download it. Simply follow the prompts to upgrade your Galaxy S6 Active to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Keep in mind, though, that the update is pushed OTA (over the air) in stages, so it might take a while until it reaches all Samsung Galaxy S6 Active devices at AT&T.
