A Samsung Galaxy S6 Active smartphone caught fire recently and caused property damage. Local media reports from Greenville County, South Carolina, revealed that the smartphone burned through the bed sheet protector and even the sheet itself.

Nakeshia Shannon had been using her husband’s Galaxy S6 Active smartphone for two years and stated that she never had any issues with the phone. However, during one night, the device started overheating and burned her sheets.

Fortunately, Nakeshia’s children weren’t sleeping in the bed at the time and the incident didn’t cause any injuries to the device’s owner either. The unit in question has already been sent in to Samsung for examination.

Samsung stands behind the security of Galaxy S6 units

In a statement to WYFF News 4, Samsung spokeswoman Danielle Meister Cohen said that the company stands behind the quality and safety of more than 10 million Galaxy S6 phones sold in the US alone.

Samsung also says that “there are no known issues with these devices.” The unit that Ms. Shannon sent in will be examined so that the cause of the incident is determined, and the company’s spokeswoman didn’t wish to speculate on what exactly caused the device to catch fire.

“Mobile phones are complex products and there are many factors that could contribute to their malfunction. Any customer who has questions or experiences an issue with a Samsung product should contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG,” said Samsung.

Last year, Samsung suspended sales of the Galaxy Note 7 after several smartphones caught fire and caused property damage. Later, the smartphone was discontinued and all units sold to customers were recalled. Following a lengthy and thorough investigation, Samsung concluded that two battery flaws caused the phone to overheat and eventually catch fire.

The company’s latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8, has undergone extensive quality assurance tests to make sure that it doesn’t pose any risk to consumers, but such incidents of Samsung smartphones exploding certainly don’t help the company’s brand image.
