Galaxy M could be the first notched Samsung phone

Samsung is one of the companies that promised to stay away from the controversial notch, and the South Koreans have even tried to capitalize on all the criticism around Apple’s design choice with a series of ads poking fun at iFans.

And while right now not a single Samsung phone uses a notch, that could all change if the information that was recently spotted in benchmarks is accurate.

After so many Android phone makers embraced the notch, Samsung might surrender the trend and bring it to the upcoming Galaxy M, which is believed to be a mix of Galaxy J, On and C series.

A Geekbench benchmark that was discovered recently revealed a Samsung SM-M205F model powered by an Exynos 7885 processor paired with 3GB RAM and running Android 8.1 Oreo.

The same model was then spotted on AnTuTu, and the listing indicates a potential resolution of 2340x1080 pixels.

Here comes the notch

While at first glance this doesn’t say much, it could be a hint that a notch is coming to this device. As SamMobile noted, this the resolution that several phones are using already, including models like Oppo R17 and Huawei Honor Play, and all boast a notch for a 19.5:9 ratio.

Samsung may position its new Galaxy M model as a rival to these devices specifically, which means that its brand-new lineup could also be launched in a limited set of markets, like India.

However, if a notch makes it to the Galaxy M, there’s a chance it could then expand to other Samsung phones too, though this is unlikely to happen on the high-end Galaxy S series.

The upcoming Galaxy S10 is expected to use an Infinity O display that would come with the camera, and possibly the fingerprint sensor, embedded into the screen. This display, however, is rather expensive, so a more affordable approach, like a notch, would make more sense on low-end and mid-range Samsung smartphones.
