After the Galaxy Note 7 discontinuation and the months-long investigation that followed, Samsung didn’t give up on the Galaxy Note line that offered a flagship smartphone coupled with a stylus almost every year.

The latest rumor says that Samsung codenamed the upcoming Galaxy Note smartphone Baikal. The information comes from Twitter user @Universelce and should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s uncertain at this point if Samsung started working on a new Note device or if the actual codename is Baikal.

Baikal is one of the world’s deepest lakes and is located in southern Siberia. The codename would suggest that Samsung intends to implement a number of features as to avoid the Note 8 from overheating. Samsung is said to source batteries for the Note 8 from rival LG.

4k display and Bixby AI assistant

The Galaxy Note 8 is expected to feature a 4k display and Bixby AI assistant, aside from the usual spec sheet that contains the latest chipset and improved features for the S Pen stylus. However, this is just speculation at this point, as it is a bit too early to say anything for certain. The Galaxy Note 8 is expected to arrive in the second half of the year, at least 5-6 months from now.

Samsung hasn’t given up on plans to deliver a Galaxy Note 8, and Mobile Chief at Samsung DJ Koh has recently stated that “I will bring back a better, safer and very innovative Note 8.” He adds that this decision comes from the desire to offer Galaxy Note 4 and Note 5 owners a Note product to upgrade.

Seeing how one of the main features of Galaxy Note smartphones is the S Pen, some Note fans might be looking to buy the Galaxy S8, rumored to come with a stylus as an external accessory. It remains to be seen which features Samsung will incorporate in the Note 8, but the company must make sure that it delivers a product that would truly restore the line’s reputation.
