14 DAY TRIAL // The Galaxy J1 is one of the most affordable Android smartphones launched by Samsung to date. It made its debut in early September and is now available for purchase for around $95 / €85 outright.
However, it looks like Samsung plans to launch a mini version of the Galaxy J1 with slightly different specs in tow.
The good news is Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini comes with slightly better features than the standard model, so we're not sure why the South Korean company would name it “mini.”
For example, both Samsung Galaxy J1 and the mini version boast 4.3-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen displays that support 800 x 480 pixels resolution.
However, the mini variant features a slightly more powerful 1.5 quad-core Spreadtrum SC8830 chipset inside whereas the Galaxy J1 comes with a 1.3GHz dual-core processor.
Lower front camera, but better CPU and amount of memory
Moreover, Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini packs 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, while the current model has only 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory.
Both smartphones come with similar 5-megapixel rear-facing cameras, but the Galaxy J1 packs a 2-megapixel camera on the front while the mini model features a modest VGA selfie camera.
Another main difference between the two Galaxy J1 handsets is software. Currently, Samsung Galaxy J1 is offered with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system right out of the box, but the upcoming Galaxy J1 Mini will run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, according to GFXBench.
Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini has been spotted on Spreadtrum website with model number SM-J105F, just like the name of the phone in the GFXBench database.
There's no word on availability and price yet, but a smartphone with model number SM-J105F has recently passed through Zauba, India's import export entity, with a $50 price attached to it.
Since the Galaxy J1 Mini has been leaked from multiple sources recently, we expect Samsung to make it official in the next couple of weeks.
