Samsung is expected to launch its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S7 in late February. We already know quite a few things about the handset's specs sheet, including the fact that it will be equipped with Samsung's powerful Exynos 8890 chipset.

However, the Galaxy S7 won't be the only smartphone to come equipped with a Samsung Exynos chipset inside. Word is the South Korean company plans to launch a slightly downgraded version of its powerful Exynos 8890 chipset.

The new chipset appears in a report coming from China and is dubbed as Exynos 8870, GizmoChina claims. The source of the rumor states that the Exynos 8870 chipset features the same Mongoose architecture, but CPU frequency will be slightly lower.

Also, Samsung plans to include another graphics processing unit inside the Exynos 8870 chipset, less powerful than Exynos 8890's.

Some of the first smartphones to pack Exynos 8870 chipsets belong to Meizu. Several high-end Meizu smartphones will be powered by this octa-core processor, including the Pro 6 and Pro 6 Mini.

Xiaomi might want Samsung's chip inside its phones as well

It's also worth mentioning that Exynos 8870 will make its debut on the market sometime in the second quarter of 2016. The collaboration between Meizu and Samsung might be made official in the coming months.

Furthermore, it's possible that Samsung may supply its Exynos 8870 chipset to additional handset makers, but no names have emerged yet.

If we are to speculate, then some of Xiaomi's high-end smartphones might come equipped with the unannounced Exynos 8870 chipset, though we know the standard version will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 processor.

Other Chinese OEMs may want Samsung's Exynos 8870 chip inside their smartphones if this proves to be a better choice than MediaTek's Helio X20 processor.

We expect more details on the matter to surface online in the coming months, so stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
