Samsung is already one of the companies investing big in foldable smartphones, and needless to say, it’s also a pioneer of this form factor, with the Galaxy Fold and Flip lineups currently spearheading the market.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Samsung isn’t planning more ambitious upgrades in the long term, and a recent patent application discovered by SamMobile provides us with an early look at how the company sees the current form factor evolving.

The patent application at World Intellectual Property Office, describes a dual-screen device – Samsung is currently offering foldable devices, so the company is apparently considering an expansion of the current form factor.

Interestingly, the South Koreans are apparently exploring an approach that was previously used by Chinese company ZTE on the Nubia lineup.

“According to various embodiments disclosed in the present document, an electronic apparatus comprises: a housing comprising a first surface and a second surface facing in a direction opposite to the first surface; a first display which is arranged on the first surface and outputs a screen in a first direction; and a second display which is arranged on the second surface and outputs a screen in a second direction that is a opposite direction to the first direction, wherein the second display may be configured to be at least partially transparent so as to visually expose at least a portion of an inner area of the second surface. Various other embodiments are possible,” the abstract section of the patent reads.

Needless to say, it’s essential to keep in mind that this is just a patent application, and there is no guarantee that Samsung would end up producing such a device.

On the other hand, an expansion of the current foldable form factor makes perfect sense, so sooner or later, we should come across more evidence of Samsung’s long-term strategy on this front.
